day 20
18.11.22, 15:53. Very lightly hazy: cream fog over washed-out blue sky
Listen to Dub Techno on Youtube. Bake off a first attempt at Dutch-process black cocoa crinkle cookies for next week… Cream the butter and sugar, then add eggs and vanilla; whisk together cocoa, flour, baking soda, salt. Add dry to wet and mix until just combined. Chill the dough for a few hours – J returns from the mechanic down the hill: Goma’s engine mounts are the source of the rattling, not the ignition, which is a relief. He sweeps and cleans the kitchen floor while I figure out how we’re going to use the odd salvaged furniture we have to seat our guests for Thanksgiving. I butter us toasted crumpets with fresh pesto à la Joe, with lots of lemon juice and scallion. Also had brined some red cabbage last night to remove the moisture and dress it now in sesame oil, rice vinegar, more lemon juice, and shichimi togarashi. Serve in those slate gray ramekins that were a screamin’ deal at Target (four for $2) at the end of our long cobbled-together ‘dining table.’ The sliver of sun we get in winter comes in through the westernmost window and the cat spreads herself to absorb the best of it…
